HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has reopened all lanes of Kamehameha Highway near Kaaawa. The northbound or makai lane on Kamehameha Highway near Kaaawa Valley Road and Kanenelu Beach in Kaaawa was closed Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, due to damage from high surf.

Work began to repair the damaged asphalt and guardrail on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, and was originally expected to end Friday, March 4. HDOT crews and contractors worked from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily to remove the damaged asphalt and guardrail, fill the area with controlled low strength material (CLSM), install a new guardrail and repave the roadway. While the highway is open, crews will need to return at a later date to remove the sandbags, weather and surf permitting.

“I’d like to thank the public for their patience during the work, along with the City and County of Honolulu, the Army Corps of Engineers, and our contractor Delta Construction Corporation for their assistance with the expedited repairs,” said Ford Fuchigami, Hawaii Department of Transportation Director. “This repair will help protect the area from future erosion as we continue to pursue solutions to preserve our coastal roadways.”
