KAHULUI — The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is proud to announce that the Design-Build contract for the Lahaina Bypass 1B-2 phase, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration – Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD), has been awarded to Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc., Honolulu, HI. The awarded contract amount of $38.6 million includes design and construction services for 2.7 miles of the bypass at the southern terminus, south of Lahaina on Maui. The Lahaina Bypass 1B-2 phase starts at the southeastern termini of the previous bypass phase (Lahaina Bypass 1B-1) at Hokiokio Road and continues approximately 2.7 miles to the southeast to the proposed southern terminus at the Honoapiilani Highway (State Route 30). The estimated contract completion date is January 2018.
The primary objective of the project is to extend the current bypass to the east to further alleviate current and projected congestion on the Honoapiilani Highway (State Route 30), specifically through Lahaina. The project will not only improve vehicular throughput, but will also provide an alternate route through the area, increase dependability and durability of the facility especially considering shoreline erosion and future sea level rise, and will allow the existing highway to be upgraded to better serve all users of the highway when appropriate.
Relieving traffic congestion is one of Governor David Ige’s top priorities. This project is another example of the administration’s commitment to finding traffic solutions statewide. HDOT will continue to work with the Federal Government to ensure the projects are completed in a timely manner.
