Nighttime eastbound H-1 Freeway lane closures in Kalihi beginning Monday, Oct. 24

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists that all lanes will be closed on the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction between Middle Street and Liliha Street on Monday night, Oct. 24, 2016 through Thursday morning, Oct. 27, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., nightly. The Middle Street Tunnel from the Airport Viaduct and the Kalihi Street On-Ramp will also be closed during this time.

The closure is necessary for the installation of additional Vehicle Traffic Counting (VTC) System detector loop units in each of the four eastbound lanes. The wiring for the sensors is interconnected and embedded in the pavement, so installation must occur concurrently across all four lanes.

Motorists approaching the closure via the H-1 Freeway may consider Nimitz Highway as an alternate route or exit the eastbound H-1 Freeway at the Middle Street/Dillingham Boulevard Off-Ramp (Exit 18B), continue on Dillingham Boulevard, and reenter the H-1 Freeway at the School Street/Liliha Street On-Ramp.

Motorists approaching via the H-201 Moanalua Freeway can exit at the Fort Shafter/King Street Off-Ramp and may consider turning left onto Middle Street/School Street and using the School Street/Liliha Street On-Ramp to reenter the eastbound H-1 Freeway.

Electronic message boards will be posted on the H-1 Freeway and the H-3 Freeway to notify motorists of the closure. Emergency vehicles, first responders and TheBus have been notified of the roadwork and will be allowed through the work zone. If the sensor installations are completed during Tuesday night’s work, closures may not be necessary on Wednesday night. Roadwork is weather permitting.

HDOT advises motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time to reach their destinations. Lane closure information will be posted on the HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/ If the Wednesday closure is not necessary, an update will be provided via our social media channels.
