LIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is alerting the public of a temporary closure of the Wailua River Bridge (mauka bridge) for emergency repair work to nearby power lines beginning at midnight Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016. All traffic will be detoured to Cane Haul Bridge.

The detour onto the Cane Haul Bridge will be contraflowed. Motorists should drive with caution, expect delays and adjust their travel times as needed. If possible, motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The emergency work is being conducted by the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) in response to a live wire that fell on Kuhio Highway Wednesday evening, Sept. 21, 2016.

KIUC will advise when it is safe to reopen the bridge.
