Weekend closure of the Kipapa Stream (Roosevelt) Bridge on Kamehameha Highway in Mililani begins Friday night, October 5

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) alerts Oahu motorists that Kamehameha Highway will be closed in both directions between Ka Uka Boulevard and Lanikuhana Avenue from 9 p.m. on Friday night, Oct. 5, 2018, continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday morning, Oct. 8, 2018, for bridge rehabilitation work at the Kipapa Stream (Roosevelt) Bridge.

The closure is necessary for crews to repair areas of deeply spalled concrete and to facilitate the lane reconfiguration/restriping work on Kamehameha Highway from the bridge to Lanikuhana Avenue. The work requires a full closure because placement of the repair material will need to be done without traffic vibrations to allow it to adequately cure and achieve the required strength prior to opening the bridge to traffic.

During closure hours, motorists may use the H-2 Freeway as an alternate route. HDOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations and check traffic apps like GoAkamai.org to plan their commutes.

An additional tentative full closure may occur in October to complete the lane reconfiguration/restriping work. The existence of this closure will be determined by the work completed during this weekend’s closure.

As previously reported, Kamehameha Highway will be restriped between the Kipapa Stream Bridge and Lanikuhana Avenue to increase motorist, bicyclist, and pedestrian safety. The roadway will be restriped to accommodate two 11-foot travel lanes (one northbound lane and one southbound lane), a 3- to 6-foot median, and 4- to 6.5-foot shoulders. More information on these improvements can be found here.

The bridge work impacting traffic is estimated to be completed by October 2018, with the overall project estimated to be completed by November 2018.

Electronic message boards will be posted to warn motorists of the closures. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Emergency vehicles and first responders have been notified of the roadwork and will be allowed through the closure. TheBus will be advised to take an alternate route. Roadwork is weather permitting.
