KAHULUI — The state Department of Transportation advises Maui motorists of a permanent closure of a section of Kala Road from Hana Highway to Eena Street, effective Wednesday, February 8, near the Kahului Airport.

In a collaborative agreement by the state Department of Transportation and Maui County, access gates will be locked at both ends of this section of Kala Road in the interest of public safety, due to an increase in illegal dumping, brush fires and criminal activity.  Public access will be reopened in the event of an emergency or evacuation with gate keys issued to first responders, county, and civil defense officials.

Access to Kala Road, Lelepio Place, Eena Street, Kuhea Street and Kahului Airport facilities will remain accessible from Haleakala Highway at the Hana Highway intersection (see map below).
