[UPDATED @ 2:15 PM] H-1 ZipperLane Fully Closed Before Afternoon Rush-Hour, Westbound Traffic Unaffected

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists that the H-1 Freeway ZipperLane was completely closed at 2 p.m. between the Nimitz Highway westbound on-ramp, near Sand Island Access Road, and the H-1 Airport Off-Ramp (Exit 18).  All freeway lanes are open for normal afternoon traffic and westbound traffic flow has not been impacted.

The ZipMobile suffered a small electrical fire in the vehicle’s engine that has temporarily disabled its drive functions.  A tow truck was used to pull the ZipMobile to close the remaining barrier segments over roughly one mile and back to the Zipper Hale maintenance facility on the Airport Viaduct for repairs.

The backup ZipMobile is functioning and will be used for normal operations tomorrow.

HDOT sincerely thanks Oahu’s motorists for their patience and kokua.
