HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces a planned closure of the Nimitz Bike Path between Ahua Street and Middle Street to facilitate safety and highway operations. This portion of the bike path will be closed temporarily for approximately two weeks beginning Monday, Dec. 4, 2017.

During this closure HDOT, its contractor, the Office of the Homeless Coordinator, the Department of Public Safety (PSD), Sheriffs Division, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources will be working to address health and safety concerns. The multiagency team will also provide outreach and notice to those illegally residing along the bike path and under the Nimitz Viaduct.

This is a continuation of HDOT’s clean up and maintenance efforts that began along priority corridors in July 2017, and recently resulted in the cleanup of over 4 million pounds of trash from under the Nimitz Viaduct. HDOT continues to work with the Office of the Homeless Coordinator and PSD for regular outreach and trespassing enforcement along these critical corridors.

As a reminder, state law (HRS 264-6) prohibits the placement or storage of structures, vehicles, equipment, or other objects within the state highway right-of-way without HDOT’s permission. Any property remaining in the highway area unattended without authorization for a continuous period of at least 24 hours will be considered to be abandoned and will be stored for a minimum of 30 days. Any such abandoned property shall be handled by the State of Hawaii pursuant to HRS 171-31.5.

HDOT thanks the community for its cooperation as our team addresses the Nimitz bike path safety concerns.
