HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies the public that a fourth lane closure will be added to the roadwork schedule for the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation project on the H-1 Freeway in both directions between the Pearl City Viaduct and the Halawa Interchange. See closure details below for the upcoming week.

Up to four lanes will be closed on the H-1 Freeway in both directions between the H-1/H-2 merge and the Aiea Heights Drive overpass on Friday night, June 15, through Friday morning, June 22, for pavement work.

Friday night

  • Eastbound: Two lanes close at 6:30 p.m. Three lanes close at 7:30 p.m. All lanes reopen at 6 a.m. The shoulder will be open.
  • Westbound: Two lanes close at 8:15 p.m. Three lanes close at 9 p.m. Four lanes close at 11 p.m. All lanes reopen at 10:30 a.m. The shoulder will be open.

Saturday night

  • Eastbound: Two lanes close at 6:30 p.m. Three lanes close at 7:30 p.m. All lanes reopen at 7:30 a.m. The shoulder will be open.
  • Westbound: Two lanes close at 6 p.m. Three lanes close at 9 p.m. Four lanes close at 11 p.m. All lanes reopen at 10:15 a.m. The shoulder will be open.

Monday night through Friday morning

  • Eastbound: Two lanes close at 6:30 p.m. Three lanes close at 7:30 p.m. All lanes reopen at 4 a.m.
  • Westbound: Two lanes close at 8 p.m. Three left lanes close at 9 p.m. All lanes reopen at 3 a.m.

The contractor will be installing precast concrete panels to the middle lane of the H-1 Freeway. Four lane closures are needed to safely accommodate the equipment and construction crews on both sides of the middle lane and to allow enough buffer so motorists are not driving near the work area.

Motorists may use the shoulder lane as an additional travel lane during closure hours. Electronic message boards will be posted to warn motorists of the closures and traffic modifications. Special Duty Police Officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control and safety measures. Emergency vehicles and first responders have been notified of the closures and will be able to access the H-1 Freeway. Roadwork is weather permitting.

The Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation project rehabilitates approximately 2 miles of the heavily used H-1 Freeway between Waimalu and Halawa through the installation of 450 precast concrete slabs. The estimated completion date for this project is Summer 2020. For more information on the project, please view the website https://h1waimalu.com/

HDOT advises motorists to drive with caution and to follow all traffic control signs when entering the work zone area.
