HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is issuing the following update on the Kalanianaole Highway Improvements between Olomana Golf Course and the highway’s intersection with Poalima Street. This project was initially envisioned as Phase I for improvements to highway, bike, and pedestrian facilities in Waimanalo. In the preconstruction meeting on March 8, 2016 and in a subsequent walkthrough with an area legislator, it was decided to address the community’s safety concerns with a new project the Kalanianaole Highway Safety Improvements, Poalima Street to Waimanalo Bay Beach Park.

The safety improvements, which included asphalt concrete overlay of sidewalks, redesigned intersections, and installation of Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons, was substantially completed in late 2017. The design for the safety improvements was shared in December 2016 and can be found at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Kal-Hwy-Concept-Interim-Imp-Ph1-and-Ph2-12-30-16.pdf

The Kalanianaole Highway Improvements – Olomana Golf Course to vicinity of Poalima Street project is still ongoing but is expected to be substantially complete in June 2019. The project website is https://www.gloverltd.com/projects/kalanianaole_highway/

Currently the project contractor is working to complete the concrete work for this project, which includes the drain boxes, new drainlines, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and gutters, by the end of May 2019.

Pavement reconstruction has been completed, and final paving is scheduled for night time work throughout the month of June. When the repaving over the reconstructed base for the highway is completed, the project will be considered substantially complete.

Remaining work will be done in July. The remaining work once the repaving is complete is landscaping, pavement striping, and sign work.

Kalanianaole Highway between the Olomana Golf Course and Kailua Road will be resurfaced through our open-ended paving contract. A schedule for this paving project will be announced at a later date.
