HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) informs Oahu motorists that both directions of the H-1 Freeway will be closed nightly at the Kapolei Interchange on Sunday night, Oct. 20, 2019 through Friday morning, Oct. 25, 2019 for grinding, patching, electrical installations and concrete pours to the bridge over the eastbound and westbound lanes. Roadwork details are as follows.

  • Westbound H-1 Freeway will be closed between the Makakilo/Kapolei/Kalaeloa offramp (Exit 2) and the Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor offramp (Exit 1) on Sunday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 25, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Westbound motorists will be directed to Makakilo Drive via the Makakilo/Kapolei/Kalaeloa offramp (Exit 2) and may continue on Farrington Highway/Kamokila Boulevard, Wakea Street, and the Farrington Highway onramp to return to the westbound H-1 Freeway. See below for a map of a detour map.
  • Eastbound H-1 Freeway will be closed between the Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor offramp (Exit 1A) and the Wakea Street onramp on Sunday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 25, from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
    • Eastbound motorists will be directed to Kalaeloa Boulevard via the Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor offramp (Exit 1A) and may continue on Kapolei Parkway, Kamokila Boulevard, and Wakea Street to return to the eastbound H-1 Freeway. See below for a map of a detour map.

A full closure of the H-1 Freeway is necessary to prepare the bridge for utility installations in November. Construction requiring a full closure of the H-1 Freeway should be completed in one week, however work is tentatively scheduled for the following week of Oct. 26 – Nov. 1. HDOT will keep the public informed by news release, posts to our HDOT website at hidot.hawaii.gov and to our social media websites, Facebook and Twitter.

In addition to the full closure, Kalaeloa Boulevard will be closed in the northbound direction between Kapolei Parkway and Farrington Highway on Sunday, Oct. 20, through Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., for striping work. Motorists will be detoured at Kapolei Parkway to access Farrington Highway in the westbound direction and the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction. See below for a map of a detour map.

Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of the closures and detours. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Emergency vehicles, first responders, and TheBus have been notified of the full closure and will not be allowed through the work zone.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations. For more information on the Kapolei Interchange project, please view the project website at https://kapolei-interchange.squarespace.com/. All roadwork is weather permitting.
