Traffic shifting to temporary Kapaa Stream Bridge for bridge rehabilitation

LIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) informs the public that traffic on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) near mile marker 10 will be shifted to the temporary Kapaa Stream Bridge 24-hours a day, seven days a week until further notice beginning Tuesday, April 7. During the shift to the temporary bridge, right turns off Kuhio Highway onto Mailihuna Road are not permitted for safety.

This shift is needed to allow continued access to Kuhio Highway as crews work to rehabilitate the existing Kapaa Stream Bridge and construct a roundabout at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Mailihuna Road. Access to Kapahi is recommended via Kawaihau Road or Hauala Road.

The Kuhio Highway, Intersection Improvements at Mailihuna Road, and Kapaa Stream Bridge Rehabilitation is being done under a partnership between HDOT and the Federal Highway Administration’s Central Federal Lands Division. The construction contract for this project was awarded to Hawaiian Dredging Construction on March 21, 2019, for $23,998,000.00.
