WAINIHA – Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Kauai District staff continue to work through the night to clear debris from the February 23rd landslides on Kuhio Highway between Wainiha and Lumahai.

This afternoon the HDOT crew, alongside a crew from the Kauai County Department of Public Works, focused on clearing an emergency access route through the area affected by the landslides. The emergency access route will enable emergency vehicles to access the communities on the other side of the landslide to provide services if necessary. Emergency access must be coordinated with onsite staff prior to travel as conditions in the area remain hazardous.

HDOT anticipates survey of the slope in the vicinity of Kuhio Highway at mile marker 6.2 can take place in the morning. After the survey is completed, an estimate for reopening of the route to traffic will be provided.

HDOT encourages travelers to continue to avoid the area. Updates on the status of Kuhio Highway will be posted to our Facebook and Twitter accounts at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation/ and @DOTHawaii
