HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFL) celebrated the beginning of the Kawela Stream Bridge and Nanahu (Hoolapa) Stream Bridge improvement project located on Kamehameha Highway near mile marker 11 near Kawela Bay on Oahu’s North Shore. The project will replace the existing structures and improve the safety and reliability of the bridges, addressing bridge width, load capacity, bridge railings, transitions and approaches.

Both bridges were built in 1931. The contractor is Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. Construction is anticipated to be complete in spring 2020. The cost is $10.6 million, with 80 percent funded by the federal government and 20 percent funded from the HDOT Highways Division.

Motorists will be detoured around the existing bridge on the mauka side of Kamehameha Highway to minimize impacts to the public during construction. Existing utility lines will be relocated. Lane closure information will be posted weekly on the HDOT Highways Division roadwork webpage that can be found by clicking here.

HDOT and FHWA are partnering on 13 bridge and highway improvement projects located on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island. For a list of the projects and additional information please click here.
