KAHULUI – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) will make safety improvements to the intersection of Hana Highway and Hansen Road in Kahului due to the number of incidences that have taken place. Over the past 5 years, 9 major accidents have occurred, with a substantial amount being from motorists on eastbound Hana Highway colliding with motorists making a left turn from Hansen Road to Hana Highway.

In an effort to increase safety, the left turn option will be removed from the Hansen Road intersection, and left-turning motorists will be directed to Hookele Street where the intersection with Hana Highway is signalized.

HDOT will make the improvements by modifying the pavement striping and adding signage. The work will be completed this week. As of Monday, May 21, 2018 the left turn from Hansen Road to Hana Highway was closed.

The striping will require the closure of a Kahului-bound lane on Hana Highway between Haleakala Highway and Hookele Street. A northbound lane will also be closed on Hansen Road in the vicinity of the Hana Highway intersection. Both closures will occur Monday, May 21, 2018 through Friday, May 25, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

HDOT reminds motorists to plan ahead for delays caused by the roadwork and to use caution when driving through the work areas and after the completion of the striping as the traffic pattern will have changed.
