KAHULUI — The state Department of Transportation, Highways Division broke ground on the Kahului Airport Access Road, Phase 1, on Friday, November 8, 2013.  A small ceremony was held to bless and kick-off the project this morning.

The Kahului Airport Access Road, in conjunction with an HDOT Airport’s Division project for the Airport Loop Road, will provide an alternate route to alleviate traffic congestion and provide direct access to and from the Kahului Airport.  When completed, the new road will begin at Puunene Avenue and end at the Kahului Airport, running parallel to Dairy Road and Hookele Road for approximately 5,800 feet. The project cost is $22 million paid for with an 80/20 federal/state split of funds.  It is anticipated to be complete in approximately one year.

Construction consists of demolition, resurfacing, installation of asphalt, concrete pavement and gutter, guardrail, retaining wall, signing, lighting, and drainage improvements. There will be traffic signals installed at two intersections, one at Dairy Road and Pakaula Street, and the other at Hana Highway.  The Airport Loop Road portion of this project is expected to begin construction early next year.
