HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Highways Division, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, will hold a Public Informational Meeting for the Waipilopilo Stream Bridge Replacement Project to discuss project details and consult with the community during the Chapter 343 HRS draft environmental assessment review and Section 106 National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) consultation process.

This project involves proposed replacement of the existing Waipilopilo Stream Bridge on Kamehameha Highway (Route 83) in Hauula to meet current State and Federal design guidelines. The bridge is bordered by Hauula Beach Park to the east and southeast (makai side), and a privately owned, undeveloped lot to the west (mauka side). The improved bridge would be a single span structure consisting of pre-cast, prestressed solid planks and a composite concrete topping. The bridge would accommodate two 12-foot travel lanes, one lane in each direction, and 8‑foot shoulders on both sides for bicycle and pedestrian use. The existing Waipilopilo Bridge, originally built in 1932, has two (2) 11-foot wide travel lanes with 1-foot shoulders on either side.

The purposes of the meeting are to provide a project update, gather community input per National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and consult with Native Hawaiian Organizations and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral lineal or cultural ties to, cultural knowledge or concerns for cultural religious attachment to the proposed project area pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA of 1966, as amended (2006), and to gather comments during the Chapter 343, HRS DEA public review period.

There will be a brief presentation of the project and an opportunity to ask HDOT representatives questions regarding the proposed project. The meeting is scheduled at the following location and time.
