Zipmobile malfunction delays full closure of Zipperlane

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is alerting the public that the Zipperlane will close behind schedule today.  The Zipmobile experienced mechanical problems after partially closing the Zipper Barrier this morning.  Although the machine is still operational, HDOT decided to disengage the machine from the wall and deploy the second machine to ensure the Zipmobile was not further damaged and the closure of the barrier was not delayed.  The second Zipmobile was immediately deployed to close barriers after the first was disengaged.  HDOT will move both machines back to Zipper Hale as the Zipperlane is closed and will begin servicing the machine with mechanical concerns.

The Zipperlane, which is typically closed by noon, is anticipated to close by mid-afternoon today.  HDOT does not expect the delayed closure to impact the peak evening traffic.  More details will be shared as they become available. Follow HDOT on Twitter @DOTHawaii and on Facebook at Hawaii Department of Transportation.

HDOT encourages the public to check the GoAkamai.org website and mobile apps for up to the minute traffic conditions and see live pictures from over 200 traffic cameras. Please obey all traffic laws and check traffic conditions before getting behind the wheel of your vehicle.

With the wet weather the roadways can be slick. Motorists are urged to drive with caution and allow extra time to reach your destination safely. Mahalo for your patience.
