Nightly closures scheduled for the Kapolei Interchange project for the week starting on April 5

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists that the scheduled night work for the Kapolei Interchange project will remain the same for the week starting on Sunday April 5, 2020.

Motorists should be aware that working hours have been extended to start at 8 p.m. to maximize construction during this time of lighter traffic. For closure information and detour routes, please see below.

Road Closed Closure Details Detour Route
H-1 Freeway 1) Westbound direction closed between Makakilo/Kapolei/Kalaeloa off (Exit 2) and Kalaeloa Blvd overpass on Sunday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., for signage work.

 

2) Two right lanes closed in the westbound direction between the Kapolei/Ewa offramp (Exit 3) through Makakilo Dr on Sunday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., for signage work. All lanes will be closed as needed and traffic will be detoured.

 

3) (Will only occur if the westbound H-1 Fwy is open) Eastbound direction closed between the Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor offramp (Exit 1A) and the Wakea Street onramp on Monday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., for punch list items.

 

4) Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor off (Exit 1A) will be closed from the eastbound H-1 Fwy on Monday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for paving work.

 1) Motorists will be detoured to Makakilo Dr via the Makakilo/Kapolei/Kalaeloa off (Exit 2). See below for a map of the detour route.

 

2) Westbound motorists will be detoured to Kualakai Parkway via the Kapolei/Ewa off (Exit 3). See below for a map of the detour route.

 

 

3) Motorists will be detoured to Kalaeloa Blvd via the Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor off (Exit 1A). See below for a map of the detour route.

 

 

4) Motorists will be detoured to the Wakea St offramp. See below for a map of the detour route.
Kalaeloa Boulevard 1) Northbound direction closed between Kapolei Pkwy and Farrington Hwy on Sunday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., for paving work. 1) Motorists will be detoured to Kapolei Parkway. See below for a map of the detour route.
Farrington Highway  1) Lane closure on Farrington Hwy in both directions between Laaloa Street and Waiomea Street on Monday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., for guardrail work.

2) Lane closure on Farrington Hwy in the eastbound direction between Laaloa Street and Kalaeloa Boulevard overpass on Monday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., for guardrail work.

HDOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations. Electronic message boards will be in place to notify motorists of the closures and detours. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Emergency vehicles, first responders, and TheBus have been notified of the full closure and will not be allowed through the work zone. All roadwork is weather permitting.

This map outlines the detour route during the full closure of the H1 Westbound lanes between Makakilo Drive and the Farrington Highway merge, including the closure of the H1 Westbound on and off-ramps at this interchange. Westbound motorists must exit the H1 Freeway at Exit 2 for Makakilo Drive and turn left onto Makakilo Drive, passing underneath the freeway. Motorists will then turn right onto Kamokila Boulevard, turn right onto Wakea Street, turn left onto Farrington Highway, and finally re-enter the H1 Freeway Westbound toward Waianae using the Farrington Highway Westbound on-ramp. This map details a full detour route for the nightly closure of the H1 Freeway Westbound lanes near the Kapolei Interchange. The closed area includes all H1 Westbound lanes between the Kualakai Parkway exit and Farrington Highway. To navigate the detour, motorists travelling westbound on the H1 Freeway must exit at Exit 3 for Kualakai Parkway, turn onto Kualakai Parkway, and then turn right onto Farrington Highway heading west. Drivers will continue west along Farrington Highway past Wakea Street before re-entering the H1 Freeway Westbound toward Waianae using the Farrington Highway Westbound on-ramp.This map details the detour route for a full closure of the H1 Freeway Eastbound lanes near Kapolei, which blocks travel from Exit 1 (Kalaeloa Boulevard) through the Wakea Street on-ramp. To navigate the detour, eastbound motorists must exit the H1 Freeway at Exit 1 and turn right onto Kalaeloa Boulevard. Drivers will then turn left onto Kapolei Parkway, turn left onto Kamokila Boulevard, and turn right onto Wakea Street, where they can safely re-enter the H1 Freeway Eastbound toward Honolulu via the Wakea Street Eastbound on-ramp.

This map illustrates the detour route when the H1 Westbound On-Ramp 1A near the intersection of Farrington Highway and Kalaeloa Boulevard is closed for construction. To detour around this closed work zone, motorists must travel east on Farrington Highway, passing under the H1 overpass, and then turn right onto Wakea Street. From Wakea Street, drivers will turn right onto Kamokila Boulevard, continue to Kapolei Parkway and turn right, and then turn right again onto Kalaeloa Boulevard to head north and access the H1 Freeway Westbound toward Waianae or Farrington Highway.This map shows the detour for vehicles affected by the northbound lane closure on Kalaeloa Boulevard near the H1 overpass. Northbound traffic on Kalaeloa Boulevard is blocked just before the H1 Freeway. To navigate around this closure, motorists on Kalaeloa Boulevard must turn right onto Kapolei Parkway, then turn left onto Kamokila Boulevard and proceed north. Upon reaching the intersection with Wakea Street, motorists must turn left and cross the overpass to head west onto Farrington Highway toward Waianae and the H1 Westbound, or continue across to access the H1 Eastbound toward Honolulu. ###
