Closures on Kailua Road for removal of raised crosswalks at Ulu’oa and mid-block, past Ulumanu

HONOLULU – The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises highway users of scheduled closures on Kailua Road at Uluʻoa Street and at the mid-block crosswalk east of Ulumanu Drive for removal of the raised crosswalks.
A single lane closure will be needed between 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Kailua Road at the raised crosswalks according to this schedule:
- Tuesday, May 26 – Kailua-bound at Uluʻoa Street
- Wednesday, May 27 – Honolulu-bound at Uluʻoa Street
- Thursday, May 28 – Kailua-bound east of Ulumanu Drive
- Friday, May 29 – Honolulu-bound east of Ulumanu Drive
All work is weather permitting and will include removal of the raised crosswalks, pavement restoration and temporary striping. Should the planned work for the day go faster than anticipated, the crew may move ahead to the crosswalk removal at the next site.
The raised crosswalks were installed in September 2022 to protect the existing crosswalks by increasing the visibility of pedestrians in the crosswalks and providing a physical reminder to reduce vehicle speed at the crosswalk. Now that traffic signals have been installed on Kailua Road at Uluʻoa Street and Ulumanu Drive, pedestrians will be protected because vehicles are required to stop on red.
The unprotected mid-block crosswalk east of Ulumanu Drive will be closed permanently. Additional work to remove the ramps and direct pedestrians to the protected crosswalk at Ulumanu Drive, through the installation of fencing in the median, is planned. Estimated completion of this work and the permanent striping is mid-June.
