Governor Neil Abercrombie today joined representatives of the DOT, the four county police departments, the Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition (KIPC) and other child passenger safety advocates to kick off “Child Passenger Safety Week in Hawai‘i” with a proclamation signing and news conference at The Queen’s Medical Center.

DOT announced plans to prepare for the annual "Beat the School Jam" on Monday, August 20, through Friday, August 24, to alleviate traffic congestion. Lane closures will be postponed, The H-1 Freeway Zipper Lane and the Nimitz Highway Contraflow Lane will be modified, and commuters are encouraged to use alternative ways of transportation.

Governor Neil Abercrombie declared August as “Pedestrian Safety Month in Hawaii,” the only statewide pedestrian safety month in the nation. Pedestrian-related community events and campaigns will be taking place throughout the month to encourage safe pedestrian behaviors, as well as to heighten drivers’ awareness of pedestrians, with the ultimate goal of saving lives and making Hawaii a safer place to walk.

The state DOT and the four county police departments are reminding everyone to buckle up every day, day or night. The national 2012 “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement mobilization kicks off on May 20 and runs through June 3, but local law enforcement officers will be strongly enforcing seat belt safety laws around the clock and year-round.

Beginning Monday, March 5, 2012 all individuals renewing or applying for a new Hawaii driver's license or learner's permit will be required to show proof of legal presence in the United States. Documentation is required to establish, (1) legal name, (2) date of birth, (3) social security number, and (4) legal presence. A full list of all potential documents, new requirements and frequently asked questions can be found at hawaii.gov/dot.
