HONOLULU – The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) reminds caregivers that using age- and size-appropriate car seats and installing them correctly are the best ways to reduce crash fatalities among children. From the beginning of 2022, there have been two traffic fatalities involving unrestrained minors. Between 2016 and 2020, there were 711 improperly or unrestrained keiki injured in crashes.
“Child Passenger Safety Week is a good reminder that we need to take care to buckle up our keiki, every trip, every time,” said Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Deputy Director for Highways Ed Sniffen. “We appreciate the awesome work the Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition has put into making car seat checks easy and accessible and remind caregivers that a virtual check is just a call away.”
The Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition (KIPC), Adventist Health Castle, and Kiwanis Club of East Hawaii have organized free in-person car seat checks on the islands of Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi at the following locations on Saturday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Sept. 24.

Child Passenger Safety Week is organized by the National Traffic Safety Administration and its partners. This year Child Passenger Safety Week is September 18-24.
