Partial Launch Over Eastbound H-1 Lanes 7/6

Detour Map for East and Westbound Travel, H-1 Widening Night Work 7/11

HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is reminding motorists of the upcoming full closure of the H-1 Freeway between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp overnight on Saturday, July 11, for the deployment of the temporary pedestrian bridge to begin the demolition and reconstruction of the Gulick Avenue overpass.

In preparation for the full installation, the temporary pedestrian bridge will be partially launched over the eastbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway on the evening of Monday, July 6. This work will utilize the project’s typical nighttime work schedule; closing two right lanes on the eastbound H-1 Freeway between the Ola Lane overpass and the Likelike Highway off-ramp (Exit 20A) from 9 p.m. Monday evening to 4:30 a.m. the next day. The bridge will be deployed over two right lanes on the eastbound H-1 Freeway and live traffic will continue beneath throughout the week. Please see above.

From 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, to 8 a.m. the next day, the project will fully close the H-1 Freeway between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp, to complete installation of the bridge superstructure, using rollers and heavy equipment to push the bridge from the makai abutment to the mauka abutment. The following ramps will be closed during this work:

  • King Street on-ramp to the eastbound H-1 Freeway
  • Airport Viaduct on-ramp to the eastbound H-1 Freeway
  • Likelike Highway on-ramp to the westbound H-1 Freeway
  • Middle Street off-ramp from the westbound H-1 Freeway

Eastbound motorists will be detoured via Middle Street to parallel roadways like North King Street, Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street, to rejoin the eastbound H-1 Freeway after the Likelike Highway on-ramp.

Westbound motorists will be detoured via the Likelike Highway off-ramp to parallel roadways like Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street to rejoin the westbound H-1 Freeway at Middle Street. Please see detour map above for details.

Contingency dates if crews experience any delays due to weather, construction delays, etc. for the H-1 Eastbound Improvements have been set for: Saturday, July 18, Saturday, July 25 and Saturday, Aug. 1

The estimated completion date for the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvements Project is February 2028, weather permitting. This is updated from previously estimated October 2027.
