Kuamoo Road slope stabilization continues through May
Posted on Feb 1, 2024 in MainLĪHUʻE, Hawaiʻi – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is providing the following updates on the closure of the mauka/westbound lane of Kuamoʻo Road (Route 580) in the vicinity of the ʻOpaekaʻa Falls Scenic Lookout in Wailua.
On Dec. 20, 2023, HDOT closed one lane of the two-lane road due to slope instability. A temporary traffic signal has been installed to allow alternating traffic to use the single remaining lane. Highway users are urged to use caution and avoid the area if possible.
Emergency work is ongoing to stabilize the slope supporting the westbound lane. This work consists of installation of soil nails to anchor the slope face to the soil beneath the road and replacement of an adjacent waterline to address drainage. Project completion is estimated for mid-May of this year based on lead time of grout materials and site preparation.
Project status and pictures of the work will be updated regularly at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/kuamoo-road-repairs-near-opaekaa-falls-lookout/
