Riders will make a 12-mile roundtrip from Kahului turning around in Paia to raise awareness of the Safe Passing 3-Foot Law.

KAHULUI – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises the public of the Maui Bicycling League’s planned “Noodle Ride” on Dairy Road and the shoulder of Hana Highway Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 between 8:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

The “Noodle Ride” seeks to educate Maui drivers on the Safe Passing 3-Foot Law that was signed into law in 2018. The Safe Passing 3-Foot Law (HRS §291C-43) states that vehicles “passing or overtaking a bicyclist proceeding in the same direction shall allow at least three feet of separation between the right side of the driver’s vehicle, including all mirrors or other protuberances, and the left side of the bicyclist….” Full text of the law can be found at https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol05_Ch0261-0319/HRS0291C/HRS_0291C-0043.htm

Riders will be given a three-foot-long pool noodle to attach to their bicycles to show what three feet of passing space looks like. The ride will start at the parking lot of the former K-Mart on Dairy Road and will turn around in Paia Town near Baldwin Avenue. A support vehicle will accompany the riders.

HDOT encourages all road users to be aware and respectful of one another. More information on the “Noodle Ride” can be found at https://fareharbor.com/mauibike/items/181815/
