HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces work is scheduled to begin Nov. 4-5, 2016 to install fencing between the Nimitz Viaduct and the adjacent bike path, between Ahua Street and Middle Street. Additional work is anticipated to continue the week of Nov. 7 through Nov. 19. The fencing will serve multiple purposes including 1) separating stray dogs that have been reported by bike path users, and 2) securing the highway area for HDOT operations which includes storing materials.

HDOT is in close coordination with the Office of the Homeless Coordinator to provide advance notice of the work, as well as provide outreach and offer services, to persons in the area.

State law (HRS 264-6 and 264-12) prohibits the placement or storage of structures, vehicles, equipment, or other objects within the state highway right-of-way without HDOT’s permission. Any property remaining in the highway area unattended without authority for a continuous period of at least 24 hours by and that has not been identified as trash will be considered to be abandoned and stored for a minimum of 45 days. Any such abandoned property shall be handled by the State of Hawaii pursuant to HRS 171-31.5.

The Hawaiian Humane Society will be on site at the start of the HDOT work to care for any stray animals in the area.

No lane closures on Nimitz Highway will be necessary to complete the work.

HDOT thanks the community for reporting its bike path safety concerns and for its cooperation while making the necessary improvements.

Copies of the documentation relating to the work including the notice and information regarding construction work, the notice to remove objects, and the notice of disposition of abandoned property have been posted or will be posted on the HDOT website.
