HONOLULU – The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies the public of the conclusion of the public comment period for input on the addition of proper Hawaiian spelling, kahakō and ‘okina to signs along the Leeward coast. HDOT thanks all who submitted comments as a part of this process.

HDOT will be moving forward with updates to street signage with Hawaiian diacritical markings to include any missing kahakō and ‘okina.

The streets that will be updated are as follows:

  • Lualualei Naval Rd
  • Helelua St
  • Mōhihi St.
  • Princess Kahanu Ave
  • Hakimo Rd
  • Ka‘ukama St
  • Ma‘ipalaoa Rd
  • Kaukamana St
  • Mā‘ili‘ili Rd
  • Leihōkū St
  • Pūhano St
  • Lualualei Homestead Rd
  • Ala ‘Ākau St
  • Mākaha Valley Rd

No significant spelling changes will occur at this time. The updated street sign at Piliokahi Avenue will be removed as HDOT continues to consult with the community and agencies whose documentation would be affected by a street name change.

Streets on the Leeward coast with proposed name changes that will not be updated without further consultation are as follows:

  • Piliokahe Ave
  • Heleakalā Ave

Only streets with minor diacritical changes will be implemented and added to the master list at this time. The master list will be posted for public comment in February 2023 for Hawaiian Language month.
