Update on Kauai bridges damaged in March flood

Emergency lane closure on Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha will end June 3.

LIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces that the 24/7 closure of the westbound lane of Kaumualii Highway (Route 50) at the bridge between Kekaha Beach Park and the Kekaha Landfill will end at 7 a.m. Wednesday, June 3.

The 24/7 lane closure on Kekaha Drainage Canal No. 3 was put in place on April 2 after crews found erosion damage from the March 2020 rain event on March 27-28. During the closure, two-way traffic was maintained through alternating traffic control in the remaining open lane.

Work is still ongoing but repairs to the bridge deck have progressed enough to allow the lane to be opened.

The Wailua River (Mauka) Bridge and the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial Bridge (Cane Haul Bridge) were also damaged during the March 2020 rain event but are safe for unrestricted travel.

Crews began scour mitigation work at the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial Bridge and will return when conditions are right for the remaining work. Permanent repair design for the mauka Wailua River Bridge will be shared when it is approved and finalized.
