HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists of a change to the lane closure start time for the micropile installation work on the westbound H-1 Freeway between the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) and the H-1/H-2 split. HDOT is adjusting this weekend’s lane closures to begin Saturday at 6 p.m., instead of Friday at 9 p.m. HDOT was able to shorten the lane closure duration to help mitigate the traffic impacts on the public without affecting the productivity of the contractor.

Two to three right lanes will be closed from 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018, continuously through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018. Lanes will be reopened before Sunday at midnight if crews complete the weekend’s work early.

• Three right lanes will be closed from 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 through 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018 for concrete pours.
• Two right lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018 through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018 as the concrete cures.

HDOT will also set up an exit only lane for the weekend of April 28, 2018 for those vehicles exiting the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) in order to help with the traffic flow. Additional police officers will be added to discourage motorists from using the exit only lane and then cutting back through the cones to enter the main travel lanes. The exit only lane will be set up on the remaining weekends if crews are not working in that location. We will continue to review the traffic control plans to determine if additional adjustments will help alleviate congestion.

As previously reported, four consecutive weekends are needed to complete the work. After this weekend, the remaining weekends include May 5, 2018 and May 12, 2018. We are considering shifting the work hours for the weekend of May 12, 2018 in consideration of scheduled events. We will put out an update when closure times are finalized for the remaining weekends.

As this installation work involves concrete pours, continuous closures are necessary to ensure the concrete has time to cure properly. During the curing periods, the majority of the personnel and equipment will vacate the work site, but lanes will remain closed as the concrete hardens.

Closures throughout the weekend will allow crews to maximize their productivity and efficiently complete the installation work while minimizing the impacts to motorists by not closing lanes during the peak AM and PM travel times on weekdays when vehicle volumes are higher.

Electronic message boards will be posted to warn motorists of the closures. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Weekly roadwork updates will be posted on the HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/ and released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.

HDOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time and check traffic apps, like GoAkamai.org for up to the minute traffic conditions and live cameras, before heading to their destinations. Roadwork is weather permitting.
