KEKAHA, Hawaiʻi — The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces the completion of the work to replace three 54-inch culverts on Kaumualiʻi Highway near the Kīkīaola Boat harbor, with four new 48-inch reinforced high-density polyethylene culverts and two new small concrete walls at the entrance and exit. The culvert replacement required closing one lane 24/7 through Tuesday, April 8.

The $3.8 million culvert replacement project included installation of a structure to prevent erosion above the drainage pipe on the makai side of the highway, relocation of the 12-inch waterline, connection of culvert piping between the mauka and makai structure to prevent the erosion above the drainage pipe, final paving, guardrail replacement, and permanent signs and striping. Permanent striping and guardrail installation is expected to be completed later this month, but may extend into May, weather permitting.

The traffic emergency zone designation has been lifted.

HDOT thanks highway users for their patience while this project was ongoing.
