HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists of a nightly closure of the westbound Airport/Hickam AFB/Pearl Harbor ramp from the H-1 Freeway for railing repair work. The work is needed to repair railing damage from an incident that occurred on March 29, 2018. Due to the location and nature of the work, the H-201 Moanalua Freeway below the overpass will also be closed in the eastbound direction between the King Street offramp and the Middle Street overpass.

Closures will occur on the nights of Tuesday, May 8, 2018 through Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. The detours are as follows:

  • Motorists traveling on the eastbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway may use the Airport/Tripler Hospital offramp (Exit 3) and proceed on southbound Puuloa Road to enter the H-1 Freeway at the Nimitz Highway onramp. Motorists may also use the King Street offramp to enter the H-1 Freeway via the Kalihi Street onramp.
  • Motorists traveling on the westbound H-1 Freeway wishing to access the Airport Viaduct may use the Middle Street offramp (Exit 19A) to proceed on southbound Middle Street and return to the westbound H-1 Freeway at the Kamehameha Highway onramp.

See below for a detour map.

Electronic message boards are posted to warn motorists of the closures. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Due to the limited space on the westbound H-1 Freeway ramp, emergency vehicles and first responders will not be allowed through during construction hours, but they will be let through the eastbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway closure. TheBus will need to use the detour routes for both work zones.

Roadwork updates will be posted on the HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/ and released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.

HDOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time and check traffic apps, like GoAkamai.org for up to the minute traffic conditions and live cameras, before heading to their destinations. Roadwork is weather permitting.
