HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) will be conducting a traffic study next week as a component in determining if continuous shoulders for bicycle and pedestrian use will be installed along Kamehameha Highway between Ka Uka Boulevard and Lanikuhana Avenue.

Installation of the shoulders in each direction would mean a reduction in northbound travel lanes from the current configuration of two lanes to one lane. In the proposed concept, the center lane would be removed to provide additional shoulder space and a center median to separate the northbound and southbound lanes.

To perform the traffic study, a northbound left lane will be closed on Kamehameha Highway between the Kipapa Stream (Roosevelt) Bridge and Lanikuhana Avenue from 9 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2018 continuously through 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018.

The closure will simulate the traffic configuration if a northbound lane were taken away to allow for two 4-foot to 6.5-foot shoulders. This specific study is solely to collect data on travel times along this route. Bicycle and pedestrian safety and usership will also be considered as HDOT comes to a final determination.
