Work to complete H-1 Resurfacing from Miller St. Pedestrian Overpass to Kapiʻolani Interchange begins June 7
Posted on May 26, 2026 in Highways News, Main, NewsHONOLULU – The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies O‘ahu motorists that work will begin the evening of Sunday, June 7 along the eastbound freeway as part of the H-1 Freeway Resurfacing project, between the Miller Street Pedestrian overpass and the Kapiʻolani Boulevard Interchange.
Resurfacing of the H-1 Freeway in either direction, between the Miller Street Pedestrian overpass and the Kapiʻolani Boulevard interchange, was completed under this project’s scope between October 2023 – October 2024. This final phase will resurface, repair and/or reconstruct associated cross- and frontage streets within the project limits and bring guardrails, pavement markings and lighting up to current design standards.
The cross and frontage streets that are part of this project are:
- Ward Avenue Overpass (Kīnaʻu Street to Lunalilo Street)
- Lunalilo Street (Keʻeaumoku Street to H-1 Freeway On-Ramp)
- Keʻeaumoku Street Overpass (Matlock Avenue to Vicinity of Makiki District Park)
- Punahou Street Overpass (Bingham Street to Westbound H-1 Freeway On-Ramp)
- Bingham Street (Punahou Street to Isenberg Street)
- McCully Street Overpass (Beretania Street to Metcalf Street)
- Waiaka Road (Kapiʻolani Boulevard to Waiaka Place)
Crews will begin staging and mobilizing equipment to the project site, which will begin near Kīnaʻu Street off-ramp (Exit 22) beginning Monday, June 3. This work will not require lane closures.
On the evening of Sunday, June 7, crews will begin work with a single-lane closure on the right-hand side of the eastbound H-1 Freeway at the Kīnaʻu Street off-ramp (Exit 22) from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., nightly along the Kīnaʻu Street off-ramp. The ramp will be closed during this work.
Motorists will be detoured via the Punchbowl Street off-ramp (Exit 21B) to Lusitana Street where they will turn onto South Vineyard Boulevard to access Kīnaʻu Street. Please see detour map above. Crews will move throughout the project area as work is completed, each work zone will be announced as scheduled.
Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of the planned closures.
The estimated completion date of this work is October 2027. All work is weather permitting, work schedules and project completion date are subject to change per these conditions.
