HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is proud to sponsor the 12th annual Hawaii Construction Career Days event on October 25 and 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Aloha Stadium, lower Halawa parking lot.

Construction Career Days provides more than 1,200 high school and college students with a firsthand look at career and educational opportunities that are available in Hawaii’s construction industry. The event is part of the Ige Administration’s workforce development efforts to prepare Hawaii students for future careers.

“This is a chance for our department to give back to the community,” said Director Jade Butay, Hawaii Department of Transportation. “We have the opportunity to show our young people the wide range of jobs available in the construction field from accountants to engineers, from inspectors to heavy-machine operators. We are reaching out to our future leaders to keep Hawaii’s construction industry thriving and strong.”

Students will have the opportunity to learn about various construction fields and get hands on experience on equipment and machinery. Each student will be provided with a backpack, hard hat, safety goggles and earplugs to wear as they circulate through two event areas.

The “Trades” area will feature carpenters, painters, tapers, floor layers, glaziers, electricians, laborers, masons, operating engineers, plumbers, roofers, and sheet metal workers.

In the “Heavy Equipment” area students will have the opportunity to operate an excavator, crane simulator, scissors lift and other pieces of specialized equipment under close supervision by a trained operator.

Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) personnel from the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport will be at the event meeting with students and conducting skills challenges.

Students may also visit various booths with information on educational opportunities in the construction field as well as learn about career paths from industry representatives. The University of Hawaii College of Engineering and the Honolulu Community College are participating at this year’s event.
