HONOLULU – The state Department of Transportation (HDOT), Harbors Division, celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony today for the start of a new improvements project at Piers 34 and 35.  The $16 million project will include drainage and utility improvements, and install new asphalt concrete.  Interior improvements will also be made at the Pier 35 building, which will include a new elevator, stairs, offices, air conditioning, a fire alarm system, and electrical improvements.  The renovated building will accommodate the University of Hawaii’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (UH SOEST).

The UH SOEST is transitioning from the Kapalama Military Reservation (KMR) to Pier 35, allowing for construction of new improvements at KMR.  This move will improve Honolulu Harbor’s overall cargo capacity to keep pace with the state’s projected growth.

Anticipated completion of the Pier 34 and 35 improvements is scheduled in spring of 2015.
