Traffic Reminder: H-1 Freeway Nighttime Lane Closures This Week, Halawa To Waipahu

Posted on Jan 21, 2015 in Highways News, News

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists of multiple lane closures on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction beginning near the Kaimakani Street Overpass to the Waipahu Off-Ramp (Exit 8B) scheduled on Wednesday night, Jan. 21, to Friday morning, Jan. 23, from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., nightly, for girder installations on the Pearl City Viaduct.  Two right lanes will be closed starting at 8 p.m. and a third lane will be closed at 9 p.m., nightly.

The Waipahu Off-Ramp (Exit 8B) will be closed from 8 p.m. on Thursday night, Jan. 22, to 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, Jan. 23.  Waipahu-bound motorists are advised to use the following Waikele/Waipahu Off-Ramp (Exit 7) to Paiwa Street and Waipahu Street as an alternate route.  The previous Pearl City/Waimalu Off-Ramp (Exit 10) is not recommended as an alternate route to Waipahu due to scheduled nighttime Honolulu Rail Transit construction on Kamehameha Highway between Waimano Home Road and Waiawa Road in both directions.

H-1 lane closures will begin near the Kaimakani Street Overpass with a gradual merge taper over 6,300 feet (approximately 1.2 miles) per lane closed.  This distance follows federal safety regulations to provide enough distance for vehicles moving at freeway speeds to merge safely, minimizing the potential for high-speed collisions and accommodating drivers of all capabilities.
