HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists that the H-1 Freeway ZipperLane will remain deployed overnight due to a ZipMobile breakdown. HDOT will be taking the following proactive measures to reduce afternoon rush-hour congestion:

  • The ZipperLane will remain deployed overnight and will be opened to westbound traffic (all vehicles) through 10 p.m. Only one exit from the ZipperLane will be possible at west-side terminus near the Managers Drive (Lumiaina Street) Overpass in Waikele. Heading westbound, the ZipperLane entrance can be accessed from the left lane of Nimitz Highway just west of the Sand Island Access Road intersection. HPD officers and portable messageboards will be posted to facilitate traffic.
  • The H-1 westbound right shoulder lane will be opened to traffic from the Kaonohi Street Overpass to the Pearl City/Waimalu Off-Ramp (Exit 10) through 10 p.m.
  • In coordination with HDOT and the City & County of Honolulu, the Honolulu Rail Transit Authority (HART) will be postponing their westbound projects overnight.

The ZipMobile broke down in the Waikele area at approximately 9:30 a.m. this morning due to computer problems. Repairs have been unsuccessful and the ZipMobile has been towed back to its western stopping point. Replacement parts are anticipated to arrive on Wednesday for repairs. DOT thanks motorists for their patience and kokua.
