Late ZipperLane Closure Today, Barrier Expected To Be Fully Closed Before Afternoon Rush-Hour

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists that the H-1 Freeway ZipperLane is still deployed between the Nimitz Highway westbound on-ramp, near Sand Island Access Road, and the H-1 Airport Off-Ramp (Exit 18).

The ZipMobile suffered a small electrical fire in the vehicle’s engine that has temporarily disabled its drive functions.  The engine that powers the vehicle’s hydraulic arm to open and close the barrier segments is still operating and a tow truck will be used to pull the ZipMobile to close the remaining barrier segments over roughly one mile.  The ZipMobile will then be towed back to the Zipper Hale maintenance facility on the Airport Viaduct for repairs.

The backup ZipMobile is functioning and will be used for normal operations tomorrow.

More updates will be provided as soon as new information becomes available.  HDOT sincerely thanks Oahu’s motorists for their patience and kokua.
