HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), in cooperation with the City & County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS), will be making traffic flow improvements to ease congestion on Kapolei Parkway at the intersection of Fort Barrette Road, fronting Kapolei High School, beginning on Monday, July 6.

Kapolei Parkway lanes will be modified between Kunehi Street and Maluohai Street in both directions approaching the Fort Barrette Road intersection. Existing left-turn-only lanes onto Fort Barrette Road will be modified to allow left-turns and straight movements to improve traffic flow and reduce queue lengths.

“With the opening of the Kapolei Parkway Extension last October, more motorists are using the new route to directly access Kalaeloa Boulevard and the Kapolei Commons shopping areas,” said Mike Formby, DTS Director. “The added through lanes at the Fort Barrette Road intersection will help to reduce congestion with a simple striping modification that will be completed in about one week.”

“Traffic at this busy intersection often backs up, especially at the beginning and end of school days, and the modified lanes will help to move more vehicles through every traffic light cycle,” said Ed Sniffen, HDOT Deputy Director. “We want to thank our City and State partners and the area legislators for this great cooperative effort for the community.”

Single left lane closures are scheduled on Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., daily, for the restriping work, weather-permitting. All turns will still be allowed during the work. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to anticipate delays. Barring any delays, the lane and necessary traffic signal modifications are anticipated to be complete on July 10, before the start of the school year on July 29.
