HONOLULU – Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) in coordination with the City & County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management, Ocean Safety and the Honolulu Police Department will be closing Kamehameha Highway in both directions from Haleiwa to Turtle Bay beginning at approximately 2:00 this afternoon due to wave action impacting the roadway. Road blocks will be established on both ends. Honolulu Police Officers will monitor the highway and only allow emergency vehicles, public transportation including TheBus and local traffic through.

HDOT is placing electronic message boards on both ends to notify motorists of the closure. Signage should be in place later this afternoon.

The highway will remain closed until ocean conditions improve. HDOT will notify the public through its website, news media and social media when the roadway reopens.

HDOT maintenance crews are monitoring state roadways in areas commonly known to be inundated by high surf conditions. HDOT reminds motorists to exercise caution on coastal roads and to plan for increased travel times, especially during high tide. The National Weather Service forecasts high surf conditions to possibly continue through 6 a.m. Tuesday.
