HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Highways Division, in partnership with the Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) of the Federal Highway Administration, is pleased to announce the beginning of the Kipapa Stream Bridge (Roosevelt) project. This project will improve the structural capacity, seismic retrofit, travel surface, and railings of the existing Roosevelt Bridge. Roosevelt Bridge is located at mile point 14.4 on Kamehameha Highway between the highway’s intersection with Ka Uka Boulevard and its intersection with Lanikuhana Avenue. It is approximately 484-feet long, 34-feet wide, and was originally constructed in 1933.
The rehabilitation project will bring the bridge up to current design standards for roadway width, load capacity, bridge railing and transitions, and bridge approaches and will widen the bridge to provide a 7-foot shoulder lane on both sides.
“We are pleased to continue our partnership with CFLHD to improve the Kipapa Stream Bridge,” said HDOT Deputy Director for Highways Ed Sniffen. “Maintaining our state’s bridges is a priority and this bridge serves as a major thoroughfare for Central Oahu.”
The $14.9 million project is funded with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state highways funds. It is anticipated to be complete by early 2018, weather permitting.
Six full closures of Roosevelt Bridge are anticipated to take place on weekends between May and December of 2017. The first full closure is currently scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2017, through Monday, May 8, 2017. Electronic Message Signs will be setup prior to closure and a reminder will be sent out in the HDOT weekly lane closure reports to notify the public. After that weekend, traffic across the bridge will be contraflowed periodically with one lane closures.
