Kahekili Highway AM Contraflow to begin Monday, August 21, 2017
Posted on Aug 15, 2017 in Highways News, Main, NewsHONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies motorists of the opening of a contraflow lane on Kahekili Highway from Hui Iwa Street to Haiku Road on Monday, August 21, 2017, in time for the resumption of classes at the University of Hawaii. The Kahekili contraflow will operate in the southbound (Honolulu bound) direction 4:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
“Given HDOT’s funding limitations, contraflow lanes provide a good benefit to cost ratio and allow us greater flexibility to get commuters where they need to go,” said Ed Sniffen, Hawaii Department of Transportation Deputy Director for Highways. “We’re continually looking for cost effective projects to the benefit of Hawaii motorists and thank the Kahaluu and Kaneohe communities for their patience as we worked on Kahekili Highway.”
AM Contraflow operations on Kahekili Highway were made possible by a $4 million maintenance project HDOT began on the roadway earlier this year to provide three lanes in the Valley of the Temples area from Haiku Road to the West Hui Iwa Street intersection.
HDOT implemented the restriping and contraflow solution for Kahekili Highway while the long term project is being studied.
