Kuhio Highway in Wainiha remains closed
Posted on Feb 23, 2018 in Highways News, Main, NewsWAINIHA – Kuhio Highway between Wainiha and Lumahai remains closed following two landslides that occurred Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Kauai District was notified of the first landslide at approximately 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, and have been working alongside Kauai County Department of Public Works crews to clear the road.
During the cleanup a second landslide occurred in the same location, further blocking the highway. This extended the closure to include the area between mile marker 6 and mile marker 5 on Kuhio Highway.
HDOT does not anticipate the road will reopen this afternoon as route still needs to be cleared and the slope needs to be inspected and cleared.
HDOT encourages travelers to continue to avoid the area. Updates on the status of Kuhio Highway will be posted to our Facebook and Twitter accounts at https://www.facebook.com/HawaiiDepartmentOfTransportation/ and @DOTHawaii
