Lane closures on the H-1 Freeway westbound near Houghtailing Street for guardrail and shoulder improvements project

Project will also require closure of Halona Street Onramp and the Houghtailing Street Offramp from the H-1 Freeway nightly from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. beginning Friday, Sept. 14, 2018.

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists of roadwork scheduled from Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 through Monday, Sept. 17, 2018 on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction between the Aala Street overpass and the Houghtailing Street offramp (Exit 20B). Nightly closures for the work to improve shoulders, drainage, and guardrails along the freeway will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday night, Sept. 14, 2018 through 4 a.m. on Monday morning, Sept. 17, 2018.

Specific closure details for this project are:

  • Nightly closure of up to two right lanes and the shoulder on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction between the Aala Street overpass and the Houghtailing Street underpass beginning on Friday night, Sept. 14, 2018 through Monday morning, Sept. 17, 2018, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. During the nightly closure, the Halona Street onramp to the westbound H-1 Freeway and the freeway offramp to Houghtailing Street (Exit 20B) will also be closed. Motorists wanting to access the westbound H-1 Freeway are advised to use the Vineyard Boulevard westbound onramp or the North School Street onramp as an alternate route. Motorists wanting to access Houghtailing Street from the westbound H-1 Freeway are advised to take the Likelike Highway offramp (Exit 20A) as an alternate route.
  • 24/7 closure of the right lane and shoulder on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction between the Halona Street onramp and the Houghtailing Street offramp (Exit 20B), beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday night, Sept. 14, 2018 through 4 a.m. on Monday morning, Sept. 17, 2018.

Electronic message boards have been posted throughout the area to warn motorists of the closures and detours. Police officers will be onsite to assist with safety procedures and traffic control. Emergency vehicles, first responders and TheBus have been notified of the closures and will be allowed through the work zone.

Closures related to this project that are scheduled for the week of Sept. 18 through 21, 2018 include:

  • Nightly closure from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. of two right lanes on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction between the Palama Street offramp (Exit 20C) and the Houghtailing Street underpass on Tuesday night, Sept. 18, through Friday morning, Sept. 21.
  • 24-hour shoulder closure on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction between the Queen Emma Street overpass and the Houghtailing Street underpass on Friday, Sept. 14, through Friday, Sept. 21.
  • 24-hour shoulder closure on the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction between the Kalihi Street overpass and the Liliha Street overpass on Friday, Sept. 14, through Friday, Sept. 21, for guardrail and shoulder improvements.
