HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists that the Waialae Avenue onramp to the westbound H-1 Freeway will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. on Monday night, July 29, through 4 a.m. on Friday morning, Aug. 2, for sign repairs.
When the onramp is closed motorists may access the westbound H-1 Freeway by detouring to the 11th Avenue onramp via Waialae Avenue.
This work is part of the sign upgrade and replacement project, Phase 2, for the H-1, H-2 and H-201 Freeways. Contractors are working to remove and install 12 existing sign structures and foundations including bridge mount supports, shafts and footings, sign post and frames, destination sign panels, guardrails and existing electrical lines as needed.
Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of the closures and detour. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. First responders and The Bus have been notified.
Nightly closures of the Waialae Avenue onramp will continue through the month of August on Monday nights through Friday mornings. HDOT will keep the public informed with updates to our roadwork page on the HDOT website at http://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/.
Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations and check traffic apps like GoAkamai.org before getting on the road. Roadwork is weather permitting.
