KAHULUI – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Maui motorists of lane closures and reduced speed limit on Piilani Highway in both directions between Kaonoulu Street and East Waipuilani Road beginning Monday, Aug. 5, 2019, and continuing daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for the Kihei High School Phase 1 project. Roadwork will be scheduled on weekdays, Monday through Friday, throughout the month of August. All work is weather permitting.

During work hours, Piilani Highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction and the speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 30 mph for the safety of motorists and workers. Highway users are advised to drive with caution as southbound traffic will be routed through the second northbound lane through the work zone.

Workers will be trenching across Piilani Highway for the installation of electrical equipment and underground utilities to support the new Kihei High School.

As a reminder, Kulanihakoi Street from Piilani Highway to Mahealani Street remains closed in both directions 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Motorists are advised to take Kaunoulu Street or East Waipuilani Road then to South Kihei Road as an alternate route.

Message boards will be posted throughout the area to notify motorists of detours and traffic changes. Traffic delays may occur during working hours so please plan ahead and allow for extra travel time to get to your destination.
