Single lane closure on Kuhio Highway at Mile Marker 1 (Hanalei Hill) starting Monday, Sept. 16

LIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Kauai motorists of a single lane closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 560) at Mile Marker 1 (the hill before Hanalei Bridge) for upper slope stabilization starting Monday, Sept. 16, 2019.

The upper slope stabilization work will run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The single lane closure is necessary during the upper slope stabilization due to potential for debris and rockfall on the highway below the work.

During the single lane closure, traffic in both directions will be alternated in the remaining lane by flagmen. There may be times when both lanes will be temporarily closed to move material and equipment, but those will be kept to a minimum. Expect delays in the area.

Traffic camera views of Kuhio Highway in Hanalei can be accessed through the ‘cameras’ page on https://goakamai.org by selecting ‘Kauai – Kuhio Hwy’ from the drop-down menu.

Work the week of Sept. 16 through Sept. 20 will involve site preparation, drilling, and fencing installation. All work is weather permitting.

HDOT thanks the community and area businesses for their patience as we work to stabilize the slope at Hanalei Hill. Between May 4 and July 19, one lane of the two-lane highway was closed 24/7 in response to a rock slide from the slope above the highway.
