Raised crosswalk installation in Hanalei Thursday, May 21
Posted on May 15, 2026 in Highways News, Main, NewsLĪHUʻE, Hawaiʻi – The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies road users of the installation of three raised crosswalks on Kūhiō Highway in Hanalei. This will require a single lane closure in one direction at a time, on the night of Thursday, May 21 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Westbound traffic will be routed through Weke Road and eastbound traffic will remain on Kūhiō Highway.
The installations are part of the Kūhiō Highway Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Princeville to Waikoko project. The three crosswalks will be installed at Hanalei School, near the Waiʻoli Church and near Malolo Road. The locations were based on coordination efforts between HDOT and various community groups and members through multiple public meetings and discussions.
HDOT is installing traffic-calming devices, including raised crosswalks, speed tables and speed humps, to promote pedestrian safety by providing drivers a physical reminder to reduce their speed. For additional information on existing and planned speed humps or raised crosswalks, visit the HDOT Safety Improvement Map at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/safety-map/
Work is weather permitting. For weekly lane closure information visit the website at, https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/
