HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists that emergency roadwork on Kamehameha Highway in Kaaawa will begin on Wednesday, April 29, to repair a section of the highway.  Lane closures will cover approximately one half-mile between Keo Place and Trout Farm Road, fronting the Crouching Lion Inn.

Lane closures for preparation work will begin this Wednesday, April 29, through Friday, May 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., daily.  The northbound lane will be closed during these hours to allow crews to place sandbags on the shoreline to create a wave break around the highway work zone.  Traffic will be contraflowed through the remaining open lane.

The repair plan will consist of a 24/7 closure of the northbound lane at the above locations and weekday work between the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.  Automated traffic signals will be posted at both ends of the closure area to regulate contraflowed traffic through the remaining open lane.  Police officers will be on-site at all hours to monitor traffic and provide priority for emergency vehicles passing through the closure area.  An archaeological monitor will also be on-site at all construction hours.

“We appreciate the input we received from many residents and businesses and their comments helped to determine the overall construction plan and work schedule,” said Ed Sniffen, Highways Division Deputy Director.  “Every effort will be made to minimize traffic impacts and we want to thank the community in advance for their patience with these needed repairs.”

Based on community input, a daytime work schedule will be implemented with no night or weekend work hours.

Completion of construction is anticipated in approximately three months, barring any delays.  Construction costs are estimated at approximately $5 million.  Weekly lane closure information will be posted at the HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/oahu.
