Closure of westbound H-1 Freeway for the Kapolei Interchange project continues Saturday night, May 26, through next week
Posted on May 25, 2018 in Highways Posts, Main, NewsHONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists that the westbound H-1 Freeway will be closed nightly between the Makakilo Drive overpass and the Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor offramp (Exit 1) during the overnight hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday night, May 26, 2018 through Monday morning, May 28, 2018 and Wednesday night, May 30, 2018 through Friday morning, June 1, 2018.
A full closure of the H-1 Freeway on Saturday and Sunday nights is necessary for crews to utilize the westbound lanes to reset the leaning girders at the Wakea extension structure found on May 10, 2018. As a cautionary interim measure, HDOT applied bracing to the structure. The weekend work requires large cranes to reset the girders. The full closure on Wednesday and Thursday nights is necessary to lock the girders in place. The work to reset the leaning girders is anticipated to be completed by the end of next week.
An additional short notice full closure of the H-1 westbound between the Makakilo Drive overpass and the Campbell Industrial/Barbers Point offramp (Exit 1) may take place on Monday night, May 28, 2018 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. if the weekend work cannot be completed in two nights.
Motorists traveling on the westbound H-1 Freeway will be directed to Makakilo Drive via the Makakilo/Kapolei/Kalaeloa offramp (Exit 2) and may continue on Farrington Highway/Kamokila Boulevard, Wakea Street, and the Farrington Highway onramp to return to the westbound H-1 Freeway. See detour map below.
Electronic message boards will be posted to warn motorists of the closure. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Emergency vehicles, first responders, and TheBus have been notified of the roadwork and will not be allowed through the work zone.
Other lane closures associated with this project are listed below.
- Left lane closure on the H-1 Freeway in both directions between the Farrington Highway overpass and the Kualakai Parkway underpass on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 through Friday, June 1, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for sign work over the median.
